Fall Reading List

If I ever find time to read, this is what I'm going to work my way through this fall.

Possession by A. S. Byatt (rereading)
The Color of Magic by Terry Pratchett
The Jeeves Omnibus by P. G. Wodehouse
The Last Dragonslayer by Jasper Fforde

What are you reading? What's next on your list?

  1. I'm mighty impressed that you have "The Jeeves Omnibus" on your list. I am flat out in love with all the Jeeves short stories and novels - and find myself re-reading them on a regular basis.

One strikingly ironic thing about P.G. Wodehouse, for me at least, is that I find his work outside of Jeeves to be, in a word, uninteresting. For some reason, Mr. Wodehouse's wit finds its perfect expression in the persona of Bertie Wooster - and nowhere else. But who knows, maybe I'm just spoiled.

I know you aren't asking for advice, but I would recommend two of the Jeeves novels in particular.

"The Mating Season", first published in 1948, is his opus. For me at least, it is ultimate Wooster.

"Jeeves in the Offing", published in 1963, is roughly half as long, and stylistically a little more polished. Like any good entertainer, Mr. Wodehouse seems to have learned in the intervening years what gets laughs the best - and this this shorter work wastes no time in getting to them.

Sorry for this long, possibly snobish comment. I visited here just to check up on you and your family - saw the Wodehouse comment, and well, couldn't stop yaking.

    Peace!

  2. Thanks for the insight! I've heard nothing but good things about the Jeeves books, and the Omnibus was on sale for my Nook for just a couple of bucks, so it was worth it to get to try Wodehouse.

I'll definitely let you know how I like it!
