On the heels of this week's Fiction Friday post about publishing trends, literary agent and awesome guy Nathan Bransford pointed readers to this article (which points readers to this article) about the up and coming trend: Amish romances, or "bonnet books."

I'm curious what it is that draws people to these books.  I'm also curious if this new subgenre will improve sales for other Christian romance writers, such as Janette Oke.

Writing Spaces

I'm fascinated by individuals' writing spaces, and how that space contributes to individuals' writing processes. Thanks to Nathan Bransford, I found this site, which shares writers in their writing spaces.

The last, Samuel R. "Chip" Delaney, is my favorite photo (pictured right). Not only do I adore the composition, but I love how incredibly crowded that space is. It looks like my writing space just before I get sick of it and clean everything up.

I won't post a picture of my current writing space since it's in flux as we're moving things around to get ready for our little java bean, but once things get settled, I plan to post a picture of my writing space, which will most likely be either a corner of the nursery or a desk shared with Hubby in our bedroom. (Once we get into our new place, though, I'm hoping to have a bigger writing space...maybe even a proper office!)

What's Going On in Publishing?

Be sure to hop over to Nathan Bransford's blog today for an update on the publishing industry.  Lots of great information today, including e-readers, Twilight, and a dancing parrot!

Even if you only want to read this entry for the info on publishing this week, make sure you read it!

I stumbled upon Nathan's blog a while ago, and have found it a very valuable resource for my writing life.  He gives readers info about publishing (like today), as well as advice for how to find a home for books, and he even encourages readers to (gasp!) query him!  If you're a writer, or someone who's interested in the publishing industry, you would do well to bookmark his blog.

The Future of Publishing, with an Optimistic Twist

Nathan Bransford is continuing Positivity Week today with a post about the future of the publishing industry: the digital age.

When I began reading it, I couldn't help but thinking, "Digital books?  As if there isn't enough schlock on the shelves, let's make it easier to get 'published'!"  I wondered how Bransford could possibly twist this post to fit Positivity Week.

But I'm encouraged.  Bransford says:

[...H]ere's what's going to happen in the digital era: anyone will be able to publish their book, and there will be no distribution barrier. The same eBook stores that stock Stephenie Meyer and Dan Brown will stock, well, you. Readers will be the ones who decide what becomes popular. There will be no intermediary. It will be just as easy to buy a book by you as it will be to buy the HARRY POTTER of the future. Your book will be just a few keystrokes away from everyone with an internet connection (and their tablet/eReader/iPhone/gizmo/whatchamacallit of the future).

Just think about it: no wondering how in the world your book is going to find its way past a publisher into a bookstore. No more print runs! No one will be doomed by a publisher and bookstores underbetting on their success. No more bottleneck. No more que......... well, there will always be queries. Sorry!

Books will finally be able to live and die by, well, themselves, not by the best guesses of the publishing industry.

As someone who loves writing but gets frustrated with the publishing industry and the editing process and, sometimes, everything having to do with being a writer, this post was a much-needed reminder that not everyone in the publishing indutry is snarky and bleak-hearted.
